How to Cure and Care a Cast-Iron Pot

Before first use, you must remove the wax coating on the inside of the pot

  1. Fill the pot halfway with soapy water and turn on burner to medium heat
  2. While the water is heating, before it comes to a boil, use a mesh scour pad to scrub the inside of the pot – test temperature of water before scrubbing
  3. After scrubbing, continue to boil for approximately 10 minutes
  4. Empty and rinse pot
  5. Fill ¼ of the pot with cooking oil
  6. Turn on burner and heat oil
  7. While oil is heating, continuously wipe down inside of pot with a brush/mop with handle over a 15-minute time period– caution, oil is hot and do not touch with hands
  8. Turn off burner and empty oil
  9. Turn on burner and reheat empty pot for 5 minutes
  10. Turn off burner and wipe out inside of pot with a thin coat of oil and brush
  11. Pot is ready for use

Note: After this procedure, never scrub pot with soap – always rinse pot after use with warm water, then repeat steps 9 and 10.

Also, wiping down the outside of pot with oil, like steps 9 and 10, is recommended on occasion.
